A Look At the Math, 3/24/11 March 24, 2011

Nine games going on tonight, and lots–and I do mean LOTS–of C’s and E’s to talk about, including a playoff elimination. Nobody can clinch a playoff spot tonight, but the Sens could officially book their tee times if they lose to the Rangers. As for the Blues’ scenarios tonight…let’s just say I’m going to need some Excedrin to work them all out.

First, look at the West on the Magic Numbers chart, and marvel at it. Edmonton and Colorado are already out of it, but after that? St. Louis is the next team up for elimination, and they’re only looking at being bounced from the 4 spot at this point. But that could be the 6 spot if things don’t go their way tonight. The Blues would need both a lot of wins, and a lot of help, to stay alive, but as of now, they’re still in the picture.

The East is a bit more predictable. 7 teams are fighting over the last 6 spots, and everyone below Carolina is pretty much in deep doo-doo.

As an aside, if you’re curious how Atlanta and Toronto have the same Max Possible, and different numbers and teams compared against, it’s because Toronto still holds the ROW tie break over Pittsburgh, while Atlanta has lost that.

Anyway, on to the fun stuff…

ANAHEIM DUCKS. At Nashville. Would be eliminated from President’s Trophy consideration with any loss. Can clinch 12 West with a win AND a St. Louis regulation loss.
