A Look At the Math, 3/12/11 March 12, 2011

Well, paint my crease and call me a goalie, Friday night was busy. Edmonton’s playoff chances have been officially euthanized, a whole bunch of Western teams now have at least the 14 spot sewn up, Ottawa kept playing spoiler, Boston lost…

…and the Caps took care of their own part of it, moving to lucky seven and sewing up at least the 14 East spot for sure. If you’ve looked at the Magic Numbers table, you are not seeing things: the Caps really are 2nd overall in terms of available points in the East. A couple of months ago, this would have been unthinkable, but there it is.

Lots of teams with C’s and E’s tonight, including the Capitals–who could clinch the 13 East spot from their couches tonight if New Jersey keeps on keeping on. Here’s the rundown.

ATLANTA THRASHERS. At Philadelphia. Would be eliminated from President’s Trophy consideration with any loss, or with a Vancouver win or overtime/shootout.

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS. At Carolina. Would be eliminated from President’s trophy consideration with a regulation loss and a Vancouver win.

DETROIT RED WINGS. At St. Louis. Can clinch 13 West with a win, a Colorado regulation loss, or an overtime/shootout loss and a Colorado overtime/shootout loss.

FLORIDA PANTHERS. Tampa Bay. Would be eliminated from 1 East with any loss, or with a Philadelphia win or overtime/shootout.

NEW JERSEY DEVILS. New York Islanders. Would be eliminated from President’s Trophy consideration with any loss, or with a Vancouver win or overtime/shootout.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS. At New Jersey. Would be eliminated from 4 East, and 2 Atlantic, with a regulation loss and a Pittsburgh win.

OTTAWA SENATORS. Idle. Would be eliminated from 4 East with a Pittsburgh win or overtime/shootout. Would be eliminated from 3 East, and 1 Northeast, with a Boston win. NOTE: If Boston loses, and Pittsburgh does not lose in regulation, could still be mathematically alive for 3 East, but would still be eliminated from 4 East.

PHILADELPHIA FLYERS. Atlanta. Can clinch 12 East with a win or overtime/shootout, or with any Florida loss.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS. Montreal. Can clinch 14 East with a win or overtime/shootout. Can clinch 13th in the East, and 4th in the Atlantic, with a win and an Islanders regulation loss.

ST. LOUIS BLUES. Detroit. Would be eliminated from President’s Trophy consideration with a regulation loss, a Vancouver win, or an overtime/shootout loss and a Vancouver overtime/shootout loss.

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS. Buffalo. Would be eliminated from President’s Trophy consideration with any loss, or with a Vancouver win or overtime/shootout.

VANCOUVER CANUCKS. At Calgary. Can clinch 12 West with a win, a St. Louis regulation loss, or an overtime/shootout loss and a St. Louis overtime/shootout loss. Can clinch 11 West with a win and a Columbus regulation loss.

WASHINGTON CAPITALS. Idle. Can clinch 13 East with an Islanders regulation loss.

So those of you who’ve got access to a hockey package (Center Ice/Game Center), keep an eye on the Devils-Islanders game tonight, and hope the Devils can win it in sixty.

The Caps’ magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to 12.
