A Look At the Math, 3/2/11 March 2, 2011

(Before I get started with this, a prayer request: readers, please pray for my Mom.)

Okay, a couple more C and E possibilities today.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS. Would be eliminated from President’s Trophy consideration with a regulation loss.

DETROIT RED WINGS. Can clinch 14th in the West with a win.

Caps fans should keep an eye on the Devils-Bolts game, as a win by New Jersey would definitely help the Caps.

The Caps’ magic number to make the playoffs is down to 26. The Capitals took care of their two points tonight–albeit in such a cardiac way as to make me want to argue with success–and also got some help on the out of town scoreboard. The Rangers’ loss dropped them back into the 9 spot for Max Possible Points, one behind Carolina…meaning one additional point in the Caps’ favor.

Not all the news out of town was as pleasant. The Caps’ elimination number is down to 47, even with their win. However, they’re still closer to qualifying than being eliminated, and they actually increased their C/E margin with their win tonight. Their Clinch number went from 29 to 26, while their Elimination number went from 49 to 47. In other words, they got closer to qualifying than they did to being bounced.

For the record, if Brooks Laich hadn’t tickled the twine in the final minute of regulation, the numbers would have been 28 to clinch, 45 to be eliminated. So this was a win that they ended up needing to have, and they got it.

So, welcome to the new additions, and there’s your one game to work the kinks out. Thursday is Military Appreciation Night, and I expect a fine fine Navy win (or other service equivalent) from the boys in red.
