“In Defiance” July 3, 2010

(I’ll explain that title in a second…bear with me.)

I knew I couldn’t have been the only Caps fan keeping tabs on the World Cup who was sparing Horn Guy a thought. Ted had a few things to say, along with a link to an article in the Post which I encourage you to follow from there.

He also took up the occasion to encourage Wizards fans, old and new, to build their own traditions. As someone who’s sort of turning into a minor Caps fan tradition in his own right–that’s my own self-assessment, at least–I’d like to add a few words of encouragement on top.

But first, what’s up with the title? That is actually the title of a song by VNV Nation. Alas, it’ll never see the light of day at Verizon Center, and that’s a shame. I’d love to hear 18,000 fans all screaming “NO SURRENDER!” at the same time, but oh well–at least it works in my imagination. Anyway, lyrics are on this page–the song is “In Defiance” from “Of Faith, Power and Glory.” (For technical reasons, I can’t link directly to the lyrics file on that page.)

So, for fans of the Wizards and Caps alike, bring the fight. Never say die. Never surrender. Be the best you can be, and don’t let anybody stop you. (Just be warned: some will try.) Be creative. Always try to improve what you do.

You might be surprised at just how much happiness you could ultimately find there. I certainly was.

Speaking of defiance, we’re about to celebrate one of the biggest acts of it in world history. So, with that in mind, everyone have a safe and happy Independence Day.
